Name and Place

Absalom Cox moved to the Illinois territory in 1804 and settled at the Irish Settlement. Absalom Cox settled on the Kaskaskia on the old claim granted to Elijah Smith for his improvement there made. He established Cox's ferry across the river at that point within a few years after his arrival. When he located here it was the highest settlement of the Kaskaskia. He died on his farm in the year 1844.

He was elected captain of a militia company, and was in the ranging service during the war of 1812-14.
